Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle has vetoed the same-sex civil unions bill that would have given homosexuals, lesbians and opposite-sex couples all the same rights and benefits the 50th state provides to married couples. The Republican governor, who is Jewish told a news conference in Honolulu that she did not base her decision to veto House Bill 444 on her personal opinion, religious beliefs, or on what political impact it would have on any future political election. She did recommend the measure be presented to the voters of Hawaii in 2012. Hawaii Governor Lingle took the full 45 working days allowed under state law, since the legislation was approved in late April to meet with representatives of organizations and individuals on both sides of the issue before making her decision public. The American Civil Liberties Union has already threatened a lawsuit over the matter.
