MAJOR GUN RIGHTS VICTORY
Supreme Court Strikes Down Chicago’s Gun Ban

First came Heller v. United States in 2008, in which the Supreme Court ruled against a Washington, D.C., gun ban, contending that the 2nd Amendment takes precedence over that city’s local law.

But Washington is a federal enclave. So, when McDonald v. Chicago came to the scene, it demanded even greater attention. Well, like Heller, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the 2nd Amendment, extending gun rights to all 50 states in a profound way.

Available for interviews to offer an in-depth perspective on the case and its impact in the gun-rights arena is Erich Pratt, communications director for the Gun Owners of America (GOA), the nation’s second largest gun-rights membership organization and a key player in McDonald for having submitted an amicus brief in the case.

In a statement following the landmark ruling, Pratt said, “Gun Owners of America rejoices in the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Otis McDonald and against the city of Chicago. In doing so, the Court ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment applies the right to keep and bear arms, enshrined in the Second Amendment, to all 50 states.”

As a guest on your show, Pratt can dig deeper into the case and explore what may be the next step—not just for his organization, but the City of Chicago and the office of Mayor Richard Daley which, needless to say, is unhappy with the Court’s decision.

Given that Daley’s office was prepared for a defeat, City officials are gearing up to rewrite the ordinance to comply with the new ruling but, as Pratt and others expect, it will not be without layers of restrictions designed to make ownership of weapons and/or ammunition a rather painstaking, multi-hoop process.
