POLICE BRUTALITY COVERUP BLOWN Video Surfaces Showing Riot Police Out of Control
In 2003, the Justice Department under the Bush administration took Prince George’s County, Maryland, to court and won, getting the court’s authority for the feds to maintain oversight of the County’s police department following a rash of reports citing excessive force against unarmed and, often, innocent citizens (see the link to an NPR story below).
Well, as high-profile criminal attorney, Rene Sandler, can attest, the probationary anger-management rehab—which just ended last year—obviously didn’t work. Because, now, Sandler is among several lawyers engaged in a civil action against the police department for, once again, police brutality and excessive force.
Sandler represented one student who was wrongfully criminally charged by the Prince George’s County Police whose case was dismissed in court on July 8, 2010.
These most recent cases involving Univeristy of Maryland students have a common-thread incident dating back to March 3rd of this year, when the County’s horseback riot police were on the scene in University of Maryland’s College Park. The school had just upset rival Duke in a basketball game and students were out en masse, celebrating the victory in the streets.
Sandler’s client, like several other students throughout the night, says he was violently attacked by police without provocation. Police reports afterwards claimed disorderly conduct by belligerent students. However, cell-phone and other videos were brought forth as evidence with visual records to the contrary. Once Ms. Sandler showed the videos to the prosecutor, she dropped the case. Now that the criminal trial is over, Ms. Sandler is in the process of pursuing a civil action against the Prince George’s County Police Department on behalf of several students who were beaten and wrongfully criminally charged.
The most notable case is that of victim John J. McKenna who was accused by police of striking their horses, causing the horses to kick and injure him in retaliation. But a video surfaced (a portion is embedded in the NPR story) showing that police accounts obviously are false, throwing the gas of a coverup on the fire of brutality.
