British Petroleum took a major step toward capping the out of control Deepwater Horizon oil well, which has been spewing millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico for nearly three months, now.
Engineers successfully lowered an 18-foot containment cap onto the wellhead, and are now making final adjustments before testing the shut-off valves that could end the contamination once and for all.
The valves will be monitored for pressure as they are closed one by one, limiting and then, hopefully, eliminating the oil spill. The testing process is expected to take about 48 hours to complete.
Meanwhile, work continues on BP’s back-up plan, the drilling of a relief well, that is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
