NASA'S GIANT LEAP BACKWARD Space Agency's Mission to “Reach Out” to Muslim World Ignores Issues of Persecution
When the head of NASA, Charles Bolden recently said that “foremost” among his directives was to “reach out” to Muslims to make them “feel good” about their contributions to engineering and science, clear thinking individuals found it laughable. How does a space agency have Muslim outreach as a primary objective?
While NASA is now finding itself way off course, there is another aspect to this story and it involves a very curious and faulty premise. If NASA is to make Muslims “feel good” about their contributions, that must mean the Muslim world either currently “feels” bad or doesn't feel good enough already.
What about the victims of persecution in Muslim lands? Shouldn't the Muslim world be made to feel bad for that? Making the Muslim world feel good is akin to launching a mission to Mars only to end up on Venus.
President and founder of Christian Freedom International (CFI) president, Jim Jacobson, says that despite the ridiculousness of this directive, it also sends exactly the opposite message to the Muslim world that it should be receiving. CFI has issued a statement that condemns this supposed NASA “mission” for reasons other than what you might think.
As someone who fights against Christian persecution all over the world, Jacobson has seen the majority of that persecution take place in Muslim countries. The NASA mission may be misguided with respect to its charter but Jacobson also says it distracts the free world from what it should be doing – holding the Muslim world accountable for its transgressions against mankind.
The premise should be that the Muslim world needs to make things right when it comes to how barbaric much of its culture is. As Jacobson will point out, there's just as much irony in this story as there is absurdity. Instead of feeling good about contributions made long ago, the Muslim world should feel bad about what they are doing or allowing to happen now. As Jacobson will point out, when you start there, the odds of a space agency putting Muslim sensibilities at the top of its priority list would be astronomical.

CFI STATEMENT CONDEMNING NASA'S “MISSION” TO MUSLIM WORLD
SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – July 12, 2010 – Christian Freedom International (CFI), a Michigan-based humanitarian organization that assists persecuted Christians around the world, has joined the growing ranks of critics who have condemned NASA administrator Charles Bolden for his recent statements declaring that one of NASA’s primary outreach missions is to “reach out” to the Muslim world.
During an interview on Al-Jazeera, the Arab television network, Bolden stated that President Barack Obama wanted him “to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering.” Bolden also talked about the importance of helping other countries establish space programs and mentioned America’s interest in partnering with Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world.
While the backlash from Bolden’s comments have come from a variety of sources, including former NASA head Michael Griffin and Apollo astronaut Gene Cernan, CFI is most concerned that Bolden’s statements reflect America’s growing indifference to Christian persecution in Muslim nations, and the Obama administration’s failure to adopt a more assertive position condemning the Muslim-majority nations that are consistently known for religious freedom and human rights violations.
CFI was among those who called on Obama to speak out against persecution during his address to the Muslim world in Cairo, Egypt last year. Although CFI and other humanitarian organizations urged the president to challenge Islamic governments to become more tolerant of people of other faiths and to end the persecution of millions of minority Christians, Obama’s silence about the matter during the June 2009 address was to the disappointment and concern of thousands of human rights advocates.
Muslim-dominated countries known for persecution, where Christians can face arrest, false imprisonment, kidnapping, torture or even death under Islamic law, include Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, and Indonesia.
