The facts of the case are not in dispute. A Muslim mother from Chechnya had moved her family to Canada and was unable to control her 14-year-old daughter who had assaulted a teacher at school. The mother claimed her daughter came at her with a knife, and that she was merely attempting to defend herself when she tightly wrapped a scarf around the girl’s neck, strangling her to death. When the knife was located, however, the girl’s fingerprints were nowhere to be found. A Calgary judge found the mom guilty of manslaughter but has ruled she will not have to spend a single day in prison, imposing a suspended sentence, instead. Prosecutors had sought a 12-year prison term, but the mother’s probation will instead include three years of probation with counseling for grief, depression, and anger management.
