Proposed Sex Ed Has Parents Outraged in Montana

Most of a new health studies curriculum currently on the table inside the Helena, Montana, school district is a virtual nonissue going into the 2010 school year.

But the sex education component dominating the news in the past week or so is still as contentious as ever, inspiring parents from all across the Big Sky capital to descend on the school board in a collective voice of strong opposition.

While those in support of the curriculum are arguing its value in light of society’s judgment that k-12 students are learning about sex from all the wrong sources—such as their peers in the school hallway—Jeff Laszloffy, president of the Montana Family Foundation, is speaking up on behalf of the majority who find the proposal completely outrageous.

News organizations thus far have focused on some of the specifics that include sex-organ anatomy in kindergarten, homosexual attraction in 1st grade and sexual intercourse penetration options in 5th grade. But other details are not even fit for news broadcasts, while still others include instructing 7th graders of their right to an abortion.

“The fact is,” says Laszloffy, “children of kindergarten age up through 5th grade will not be able to emotionally deal with the things they will be taught. Not to mention, this policy is a blatant trampling of parental rights.”

Regardless of what pediatricians say—namely those whose medical assessments weighed in on the process of developing this curriculum—Laszloffy says sex education of this degree is something for parents to discuss with their children when the parents feel it is age appropriate—not “experts.”

Now, the battle wages on, and Laszloffy’s job is far from done.
