THE ‘HOBBY LOBBY’ PRECEDENT: Facing $1.3 Million Dollar a Day Fines for Refusing to Dspense Abortion Pills to Employees

It was a remarkably under-reported story. And, yet, Christian media trailblazer, Todd Friel, explains why it was the biggest story of 2012—especially considering the fight is still in full swing.

Todd says you don’t have to be Daniel to interpret the writing on Hobby Lobby’s wall. If one of America’s largest Christian-owned businesses loses its fight against the federal government, you and I may be forced to provide birth control to our daughters.

Yes, that is a Glenn-Beck-like prediction. But this slope has been slipped down more than once. Permit me to make my case.

In 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6-3 to overturn the Texas sodomy law heeding the cries of homosexual activists who insisted the government ‘get out of our bedrooms.’ Lawrence v. Texas effectively invalidated every law against homosexual sex in every state in the nation. Pundits were mocked for predicting that this ruling would open the door to gay marriage. Nine years later, the pundits were proven correct.

In 2012, Christian innkeepers, bakers, photographers and trolley car owners were forced to rent rooms, bake cakes, take pictures and provide train rides to gay couples taking advantage of the new marriage laws.

Hobby Lobby: In the cross hairs

The Green family owns and operates Hobby Lobby’s 500 retail locations and they happen to be Christians who believe that providing the ‘morning-after’ pill is a sin. Hence, the rub.

In one of the most under-reported stories of 2012, Hobby Lobby was ordered by Health and Human Services to provide abortifacient birth control to their employees or face penalties of up to $1.3 million. Per day. That’s a lot of knick-knacks.

Recently, Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor denied Hobby Lobby’s request for an injunction until the case can be heard and Hobby Lobby responded by saying, ‘Bring it on.’

As you read this, Hobby Lobby could be racking up millions of dollars of fines for not violating their Christian conscience.

Apparently, our government has forgotten the First Amendment of our Constitution found in the Bill of Rights: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

What does this have to do with you?

Incrementalism is the ally of liberalism. Once the government forces a privately held business to sin against its conscience, do you really think it will take long before they force you to provide birth control or gardisil for your children?

Get ready, Christian. If Hobby Lobby loses this fight, prepare to be thrown into the ring next. Government’s power grab will not end with Hobby Lobby. They may reach into your business or bedroom next. How ironic.
